Cue the trumpets. Royalty is here.
Following the cleat marks of his own Rare Gold Mercurial Superfly and last year’s glossy black Superfly, Nike has released the latest CR7 iteration, the Mercurial Superfly CR7 “Silverware”. While the Rare Gold colorway celebrated one specific trophy (the 2014 Ballon d’Or), this boot’s design is meant to generally represent the silver trophies Ronaldo lifts throughout the year.
And man, has this guy taken home some hardware in his day. Let’s run through some of the key trophies he’s accrued: 3 Ballon d’Ors, every FIFA FIFPro World XI team since 2007, 3 Premier League titles, 2 Champions League titles, and 1 La Liga title, as well as 1 FA Cup and 2 Copa del Reys. This isn’t even taking into account that he is the fastest La Liga player ever to score 200 goals and the only La Liga player to reach 30 goals in 5 straight seasons (even eternal rival Leo Messi fell short of that). I’m even leaving out additional minor trophies and other records that begin with “fastest player to…” and “only player to…”. The guy is a trophy-hungry Terminator.
Undoubtedly, you know most of this but it helps sometimes to pause and look back at all Cristiano has accomplished since he became a first-teamer with Sporting Lisbon in the Portuguese Primeira Liga back in 2002. We haven’t seen many careers like this and we won’t see many more throughout the rest of our lifetime. That’s how rare CR7 is.
Now to the new boot. Just like with the black Superfly, a silver paint job wasn’t enough for Nike and Ronaldo. They instituted the same shimmer effect on the upper, except this time its shininess is even more apparent. Check it out.
The Dynamic Fit Collar has been treated with an Obsidian blue that matches up well with the metallic silver look, while the orange on the Swoosh and CR7 logos stand out delightfully. On the bottom, we see the same gorgeous translucent blue checkered outsole that made the black version look so stunning.
Your tech specs are exactly what you expect from the Superfly. Flyknit and Nikeskin on the upper for that remarkably close, lightweight touch; carbon-fiber soleplate underneath for excellent traction; and the collar to provide you with that lockdown feel. It all comes together for the most technologically advanced boot we’ve ever seen, and it bears the name of one of the game’s greatest ever players. With the El Clasico coming up on Sunday, you can expect to see Mr. Ronaldo trouncing around in these. They go on sale Friday, March 20th, but…
