Chronicling Ivory Coast’s Lost Golden Generation
Ivory Coast has experienced a Golden Generation starting in 2006 and it ended after Their World Cup exit this summer. Players like Salomon Kalou and the brothers Yaya and Kolo Toure, have headlined a strong Ivory Coast squad over the last three World Cups. But arguably the best player in the history of the country, Didier Drogba, has become a household name in the world of soccer. Drogba scored an Ivory Coast record 65 goals whilst on international duty. In October of 2005, Ivory Coast qualified for their first-ever World Cup. During this time, a brutal civil war had ravaged the country since 2002. While the conflict was more political than violent by this point, Drogba and his teammates went on TV after qualifying and begged both sides to lay down their guns. A peace treaty wasn’t signed until 2007, but the national team served as a unifying force for Ivorians.

The Ivorians never were able to capture glory in the African Cup of Nations, including TWO devastating losses in penalties in the final (2006 and 2012). Over the three World Cups the Golden Generation were able to play in, the Ivorians were never able to make it to the knockout stage.
