The Americanization of Roma
April 16th, 2011 was the dawning of a new era in AS Roma’s history. A group of American investors, led by Boston businessman James Pallotta, became the first ever group of foreign owners in Serie A. Pallotta later became the President of the esteemed club, with a vision to update the club. For lack of a better term, the ownership group is aiming to make the club more Americanized, something that is foreign to the European football leagues. Under the American ownership, Roma has progressively improved year after year and finished 2nd in Serie A in 2013-14 and qualified for the Champions League. Although the on-field success is a huge part of the plan, Roma are looking to become a household name worldwide. The Americanized Roma have partnered with Nike, AOL, Volkswagen, and Disney to help increase exposure, particularly in the United States. USMNT star Michael Bradley was a part of Roma for a few seasons before being sold to Toronto FC. Adding to the American theme, the club has placed Mia Hamm on their board of directors.
