On the Spot: Sydney Leroux
Being one of the most important players on the US women’s national team this summer is no small task. But when you are Sydney Leroux, you embrace it as another challenge. Leroux grew up in British Columbia in Canada and was quite the star up north. She was the youngest player to feature for the Vancouver Whitecaps women’s team at 15 years old. She decided at that age that in order to further her career, she would need to move to the States and push for a spot in the USWNT.

The move proved difficult and almost forced her to leave and give up on the dream of representing the US. After a successful time at UCLA, she moved on to the professional ranks in 2012 where she ended up playing with Alex Morgan and Hope Solo on the Seattle Sounders’ women’s team. She then moved to the NWSL team Boston Breakers where she scored 11 goals in 19 matches. In 2014, she played for the Seattle Reign where she helped the team win 16 out of 25 matches, a league best.
