With both semi final matches of Copa America finished, we have our final between Argentina and Colombia set to be played on Sunday, July 14th.

Argentina Brushes off Canada

Argentina, led by the legendary Lionel Messi, faced off against the upstart Canadian team who had done brilliantly to reach the semifinals of the tournament in their first ever appearance. Manchester City striker Julian Alvarez put the Argentinians ahead in the 22nd minute after a flurry of chances from the Canadians. Lionel Messi extended Argentina’s lead in the 51st minute by deflecting a shot past the diving Canadian keeper. This was the 109th goal that Lionel Messi has scored for his country putting him in joint second place for most international goals scored. Argentina were able to see out the rest of the game and book their place in the final.

Post Match Chaos

Both Uruguay and Colombia were evenly matched coming into this game, but play completely different styles of football. The Uruguayans started off strong with striker Darwin Nunez coming close to opening the scoring early on. Both sides traded chances before Colombia broke the deadlock in the 39th minute with a header from Jefferson Lerma off of a corner kick. Colombia’s Daniel Munoz was sent off in the 45th minute after receiving a second yellow card, meaning the Colombians would have to play an entire half down a man. Talismanic striker Luis Suarez came close in the 71st minute, hitting the outside of the post, nearly leveling the game. Uruguay pressed forward, getting many chances, but could not find the back of the net. Colombia also missed chances to seal the game, but ultimately got the job done, winning 1-0 and sealing their place in the final. After the match, Uruguayan players jumped into the stands to defend their families from Colombian fans who had descended upon them and were throwing cups. Darwin Nunez was seen fighting some of the Colombian fans to defend his family. Many Uruguayan players remarked at the lack of security and police that were present at the end of the match.

Looking Ahead

A thrilling final between Colombia and Argentina is set to take place on July 14th. Argentina will look to do everything they can to defend their Copa America title, but the Colombians will look to ride the wave of momentum that they have gathered. James Rodriguez will need to play an important role if the Colombians want any chance of winning the game. Lionel Messi will be the focal point and will look to lead his side to another Copa America victory. It should be a highly entertaining match with a lot to look forward to.
