A Brief Background

The 2022/2023 season has seen many clubs looking to their past for inspiration and this year’s away kit from Liverpool is no different. The vibrant look tells a bigger story as Liverpool as a club and a city is extremely historic.

The ’90s are back to being the trend in fashion and in kit design. Whether it be inspiration from fashion trends, club history, or pop culture the latest kits pack the biggest stories. The 2022/2023 Liverpool away kit is of course inspired by ’90s pop culture. Liverpool as a city is well-known for its music scene and has inspired generations of artists, song writers, and musicians. The ‘90s dance music scene was huge and has continued to inspire dance music to this day. However, Liverpool played a huge role in pioneering the trend with its huge artistic and modern influence.

The Look

This year’s away kit is a total homage to the city’s huge influence on ‘90s dance music and beyond. Electrifying waves with a myriad of colors represent the vibrant music of the dance scene in the historic city. The back of the jersey is now home to the 97 emblem with eternal flames in remembrance of those who were lost at the Hillsborough tragedy.

The upcoming season will also see brand new LFC name and number style for the back of the jersey. These new name and number sets will be a take on Liverpool’s well-known and historic street signs. The electric jersey is a nod to the history of one of the biggest cultural epicenters in the world and a recognition of its history. Spanning from the collar to the fibers of the jersey, a story is found in all of the details.

A Move Towards Sustainability

The latest jersey from Nike is made of 100% recycled polyester materials that have been engineered with recycled plastic bottles. This recycled jersey is just one part of Nike’s Move to Zero initiative, looking to end plastic waste. These electric jerseys also feature water-based inks, which are far more sustainable and just another way the brand is moving toward minimizing their carbon footprint.

Final Thoughts

This electrifying jersey is certainly a step outside the box for a typically more traditional club. While the new home kit stuck to their traditional look, the away kit took a step away from tradition and proved that they’re on the cutting edge of kit design. This kit is also a huge move towards sustainability for both the club and brand. Now that both kits are out, which is your favorite? Let us know in the comments.
