A look into the future of the Mercurial

Nike has revealed a teaser version of the upcoming Mercurial in the Air Zoom Ultra SE. This Special edition is limited to 1000 pairs worldwide, and though it is severely limited, it is a glimpse into the not-so-distant future of the Nike speed cleat. The Merc has been steady evolving, pushing the limits of how to construct a speed boot. From a one piece knitted upper to a componentized construction featuring 7 layers. The Air Zoom Ultra however introduces a technology that is brand new to a soccer cleat: a full length Zoom Air unit.

Securing the Bag

The Air Zoom bag is definitely the key feature of the newly constructed Mercurial, because it is the FIRST EVER to feature a full length airbag. We have seen a full length airbag applied to basketball shoes and it boasts a greater energy return while providing responsive cushioning. This also means a brand new soleplate for the upcoming Mercurial that sports a 1:1 lockdown with the air unit. The new Synergia Plate is 40% lighter than the previous plate while also being snappier, stronger, and more responsive. Nike is clearly going all-in on the air with these, and that comes all the way down to the repeating “air” branding on the upper.

Upper Management

The upper has also been reconstructed with a 3-D printed textile to be more responsive, lightweight, and breathable. The upper has also incorporated Flywire technology to keep your foot locked down. An airbag is also added to the tongue for more cushioning. The idea of componentization still rings true for the new Mercurial with structure in designated areas of the cleat, and cut outs all over the upper to shed weight and provide that barefoot feel. Lastly, reinforced stitching around the laces and other areas that need reinforcement.

A completely re-done Mercurial always has us drooling, but what do you think about them? Are you feeling the Air? Let us know in the comments.
