In case you missed it, the Premier League made its triumphant return this season and what better way to recap this weekend then a Way too early Premier League prediction.

Biggest Upsets

The start of the Premier League was nothing short of disappointing with some of the biggest upsets and surprises that we’ve seen in a while. If you’re looking for the biggest shock of the weekend, I’ll give you two.

Liverpool v. Fulham

The Premier League runner ups looked in not so hot form as they barely scraped even with Fulham in their opening match. While bright spots like Darwin Nuñez and Mohammed Salah opened their goal scoring campaign with one a piece this weekend, the club’s defensive ability was nothing short of average. While the club performed at an average level, they certainly are not up to par with the Liverpool standards clubs have come to envy. Klopp’s excuse for dry playing surface proves that there might actually be something Liverpool fans need to worry abou. Many top experts have predicted that Liverpool are destined to win the league this season with even a Champions League title in the mix, but after this weekend’s performance the club will be lucky to make it into the Europa League.

Manchester United v. Brighton-Hove Albion

Manchester United has had their fair share of club drama this off season and were looking to put the nasty spell behind them with an opening weekend win. However, their matchup this weekend was frankly embarrassing for fans of the club and proved the drama is making its way onto the field. Two back-to-back goals set Brighton over the edge this weekend and proved that United clearly has a lot of work to do. The Red Devils could not manage to score a goal themselves this weekend, with their only goal coming from a Brighton player. If you aren’t worried yet, you should be. The club has spent quite a bit this offseason and can’t manage to keep Ronaldo happy enough to want to stay. If there’s one big club that is going to have some major woes this season, it’s definitely Manchester United.

Shaping Up for a Disappointing Season

While some of the clubs have pretty much cemented their futures, there are definitely some of the big clubs you’re going to be starkly disappointed in.

Chelsea

If you watched Chelsea’s match up with Everton this weekend you’re probably feeling a little uneasy about the season ahead. If this season is anything like their first match, you are going to be thoroughly disappointed with the Blues this season. Their lackluster performance was topped off by their sluggish offense that barely propelled them to success. What is more alarming for Chelsea is Raheem Sterling. The new signing is destined for greatness, but it’s evident Everton knew how to defend him so he never got the chance to shine. Chelsea’s saving grace is most definitely their backline. After minimal offense chances, the Blues were dependent on Thiago Silva to hold down the fort on the defensive end. While Chelsea have some great players and made big moves this off season, their performance opening weekend leaves a lot to be desired.

Who is taking home the title?

If you watched any of the matches this weekend the most impressive were from the clubs you definitely would have expected.

Manchester City

After a historic summer of signings the reigning Premier League champions have made sure to let everyone know it was all for good reason. Erling Haaland, arguably the most notable signing of the summer made his Premier League debut and left no crumbs behind. The Norwegian striker scored not one, but two goals in his debut for the club silencing all the talk from preseason. If there is one thing Manchester City can do, its capitalize on their momentum. Haaland’s attacking prowess is just one of the many things the club has going for them this season. If you look at their back line and creative playmakers in the midfield the club shouldn’t face any major threats on the way to the top. For the first time in many years, the club actually has a point man up top which means clubs are going to have to be more cognisant of the champion’s attacking front.

Tottenham

If there is one thing we learned this weekend it’s that Tottenham is not messing around. A huge 4-1 victory over Southampton provided us with four different goal scorers, proving the club is moving forward offensively. Falling down 1-0 in just the 12th minute of the match, the Spurs answered just 9 minutes later with an emphatic goal that had the crowd on their feet. The goal sparked a comeback for the club that would assert their dominance and make sure that their power is known in the League. While the club has been a huge power player for the league in the past decade, this season is destined to prove all the naysayers wrong. The new signings for the club did not seem like they would make a difference this season, Sunday’s match-up has me stand corrected. If you’re looking for a real front runner for the upcoming season, Tottenham definitely have the tools to do so. Quite honestly I can see Conte’s Tottenham shock us all and get their hands on a couple of trophies this season. Sleeping on the Spurs is out of the question this season.

Arsenal

Out of the gate the Gunnars proved that they are not messing around this season. Arsenal’s huge attacking presence is what carried them over the top of Crystal Palace. New signings and returning players proved that they mesh well and are playing high quality football this season. Martinelli and Guehi’s goals came just when the moment demanded them cementing their attacking presence in the league this season. However, what’s more impressive is the clean sheet Arsenal was able to hold during the entire match. Saliba’s debut for the club could not have come with a more perfect result and performance. His top notch defending is certain to keep the Gunnars on top of the table all season long. Whether you want to hop on the hype or not, the Gunnars are going to shock everyone with their all around style of play.

Final Thoughts

After week 1 we were able to get a huge look into what this Premier League season is going to look like. Our top contenders this season; Manchester City, Tottenham, and Arsenal are proving that their signings and results are no joke. These clubs made a statement in game 1 of the season and are definitely looking like the lockdowns for the top three spots. However, clubs like Manchester United, Chelsea, and Liverpool are going to be big disappointments to their fans this season. If you’re looking for wins and a trophy, you’ll definitely need to look somewhere else.
