US Soccer fans the news we have been waiting for is finally here, the official squad headed down under has been released. After much speculation and injury news surrounding the release we officially have the squad looking for their fifth title.

Goalkeepers: Alyssa Naeher, Casey Murphy, Aubrey Kingsbury

Nothing super surprising from Vlatko Andonovski when it comes to the Goalkeeping situation. While the last tournament saw A.D. Franch make the final cut, her lack of playing time in Kansas City and inconsistent call ups led to a younger choice. We expect Alyssa Naeher to be the number one choice in goal for the US, but Murphy has consistently proven that she could be a legitimate option for the US.

Defenders: Alana Cook, Crystal Dunn, Emily Fox, Naomi Girma, Sofia Huerta, Kelley O’Hara, Emily Sonnett

Perhaps the most glaring absence for the United States is veteran Center Back Becky Sauerbrunn. The announcement of her missing the tournament was a shock that hit the USA hard. The US will really need to shore up their back line to truly be a formidable threat. While the US is missing their key veteran in the back, Kelley O’Hara could prove to be the leader they need. With Dunn and Sonnett the United States could really prove to be an attacking presence even starting in the back.

Midfielders: Savannah DeMelo, Julie Ertz, Lindsey Horan, Rose Lavelle, Kristie Mewis, Ashley Sanchez, Andi Sullivan

Veterans return while some questions remain about who will be in the XI with the US’s midfield. While Ertz is making her return after nearly two years of absence, she has not yet proven to us that she could be a solid option in the midfield. Lavelle has been out with an injury for weeks which has us worried if she will be ready in time to be a formidable force in the midfield. While the midfield for the United States is full of veteran presence, will this be enough to bring home yet another title.

Forwards: Alex Morgan, Megan Rapinoe, Trinity Rodman, Sophia Smith, Alyssa Thompson, Lynn Williams

A mix of old and new really sums up the front line for the United States. With experienced talent like Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe to young stars that are looking to leave their mark, this could be the most exciting World Cup forward-wise. While the US is missing star Mallory Swanson who has really upped her game since the last World Cup, young stars like Sophia Smith and Trinity Rodman are poised to step in and be the spark the USA needs.

Final Thoughts

The 2023 World Cup is shaping up to be one of the most exciting yet. With a multitude of players missing due to injury world wide, the playing field looks to be more even and exciting than ever before. The United States will need to figure out the back line situation during the group stage and cement their midfield before it is too late. Goal scoring really shouldn’t be a problem for the US, but the Americans will need to get hot at the right time.
