Every year we track the newest boot releases and jersey updates, but let’s not forget the key piece of gear on the pitch – the ball itself. Today, we’re going to break down the top five best soccer balls for the coming year, and what makes them so great.

Adidas Al Rihla Pro

As the official match ball for the 2022 World Cup held in Qatar, the Al Rihla Pro is likely the best soccer ball currently on the market. The Al Rihla, which means “journey” in Arabic, is meant to evoke the dhow boats of Qatar with its small triangular panels. These twenty panels feature a dimple and groove micro texturing, similar to golf balls, which improves the ball’s aerodynamics and stability while in the air, making long shots that much faster and more accurate.

Select Brilliant Super TB V22

Select’s newest offering, the Brilliant Super TB V22 utilizes a new 3D diamond structure to ensure a more stable trajectory in the air, as well as improving friction between the ball and player’s cleats. Additionally, the ball’s panels are thermo-bonded rather than stitched together, which means water has fewer opportunities to seep in and alter the ball’s weight or handling. A 4mm-thick foam lining and latex bladder underneath also helps improve balance and handling.

Nike Flight

Made from a mix of synthetic leather, rubber, polyester, and cotton, the Nike Flight integrates All Conditions Control technology that allows it to handle in both wet and dry weather conditions. Even the ball’s exterior paint job is advanced, having been 3D printed onto its surface so as to not impact the ball’s handling. The unique grooved appearance of the Nike Flight is molded in a specific way to let air pass over it more easily.

Wilson Vivido SB WS

As the official ball for the NCAA men’s and women’s soccer leagues, the Vivido SB WS is made from 20 panels of micro-textured TPU leather. Wilson’s Visual Spin technology uses color variation to improve the ball’s visibility when out on the field. Like other balls on this list, the Vivido SB WS relies on thermo-fused panels to maintain the ball’s shape and shut out water, while the bladder of elastomeric-carbon keeps the ball balanced and improves acceleration after every pass and shot.

PUMA Orbita La Liga

Used in the Spanish top flight, the Orbita La Liga from PUMA uses several innovative techniques to improve durability and performance. With just twelve panels used for its exterior, the Orbita La Liga minimizes water absorption and air retention as much as possible, while also creating fewer places for the panels to tear open. The ball’s enlarged and deep seams also help improve aerodynamics, while the 1.2mm thick synthetic leather surface ensures the Orbita La Liga can withstand hundreds of hours of play.
